Who We Are
The Northfield Historical Society is a 501(c)3 organization serving both local families and school children as well as visitors from across the globe. The museum provides our community with a place to reflect on its history. It provides a location for the safekeeping of items, images, and stories that will allow future generations to connect with their roots. It offers a sense of place for our present and it plays a critical role in preserving our shared experiences as we look to the future.
The society is made up of history enthusiasts of all ages who love Northfield and are passionate about sharing its colorful history. We enjoy engaging visitors, hearing stories, and keeping the town's treasures preserved and accessible so that future generations can learn about and love Northfield, too!
What We Do
The Northfield Historical Society operates the museum in the heart of downtown Northfield. We tell the story of the town and the people before, during, and after 1876 bank robbery. We also showcase a variety of other Northfield stories in the Ted Scott Room. We host public programs for the community, each time seeking to find new and innovative ways to do so. We give junior high and high school students a chance to experience museum work by teaching them how to oversee the store and give tours to visitors. We perform research for individuals, businesses, and the City of Northfield. We work collaboratively with Carleton College to provide research opportunities and internships to students. We provide opportunities for people to gather, experience history, share their own stories, and love their town just a little bit more.
