Volunteer: Socialize & Give a Caregiver Respite

Caregiver Respite ensures caregivers know they are not alone and that help is available.
Trained volunteers provide non-medical companionship, supervision, and a friendly face for older adults and those with disabilities, allowing their primary caregiver some time away for work, family, and rest.

Often times, people living with disabilities or memory loss and their caregivers have limited social contact outside their families. Volunteers are welcomed as friends, and relationships develop; caregivers begin to cope better with daily stress, and thus the whole family is served. Volunteers are paired with a family and serve 4 – 16 hours a month, although there is no minimum or maximum amount of time that can be donated.
This time can be spent painting, listening to music, doing puzzles, and socializing in other amazing ways!

Respite Care
Respite care volunteers offer quality companionship to someone with memory impairment or a chronic condition. This allows the primary caregiver to take a few hours off to attend to their needs. This has several benefits as it gives the primary family caregiver time:

To enjoy other activities like lunch with a friend or other social outings. To run errands or make appointments without feeling rushed. To take a break, both mentally and physically.

Respite care volunteers typically provide respite to their assigned family for 2-4 hours weekly or every other week.

Training
Respite Volunteer Training is offered to support respite volunteers. The training only takes 2 hours, and the education explores HIPAA and client confidentiality, boundaries, professionalism, and respect. It also includes case examples, caregiving-centric issues, and dementia education. Upcoming trainings are posted here: FSR Volunteer Events

Matching Process
Neighbors Helping Neighbors takes great care to match a volunteer and family. The Volunteer should feel comfortable handling the Care Receiver’s level of functioning. The Care Receiver should feel comfortable and respected by his/her new Volunteer companion.

Volunteer: Friendly Visiting Volunteers Needed

By volunteering as a friendly visitor or companion, you can make a positive difference in the life of a senior who's 60 or better.

Senior companion volunteers offer socialization, conversation, hobby sharing, and more. This friendly visiting helps older adults stay active, healthy, and help them to continue living independently at home.

Weekly or bi-weekly visits can keep older adults feeling well — both physically and mentally. Through in-home visits, just a couple hours at a time, you can help offer assistance by:

Being a friend who listens and offers encouragement. Sharing hobbies and interests such as playing cards, going for a walk, watching a movie/show, or doing a puzzle. Providing non-medical support - helping an older adult run errands, get to medical appointments, go grocery shopping, etc. Providing a break for family caregivers.

If you would like more information about this opportunity, please "Respond" or contact a member of our Volunteer Engagement Team at 507-287-2010 or volunteers@familyservicerochester.org

Volunteer: Drive a Senior to an Appointment

Are you looking for a simple way to help someone in your community? Are you a safe driver?

Becoming a volunteer driver is an opportunity that can really make a difference in the quality of someone's life! Our team of volunteers help seniors and those with disabilities stay mobile with ride assistance.

Transportation is an essential need among older adults in our community, and it is the most requested senior independence service. Many seniors are no longer driving but still have doctor appointments to get to and errands to run. You can assist these individuals by volunteering!

As a volunteer driver, you choose when to help with transport requests if they fit with your schedule and transport the consumer to and from their location in your own vehicle. Most transportation requests are for medical appointments, but we also accept transport requests to grocery stores, churches, community centers, banks, hair salons, shopping centers, and social events.

If you would like more information about this request, please "Respond" or contact a member of our Volunteer Engagement Team at 507-287-2010 or volunteers@familyservicerochester.org

Volunteer: Lawn Mowing - Help a Senior Neighbor

The Neighbors Helping Neighbors program is looking for volunteers to help with lawn mowing and essential yard maintenance.

Volunteers are matched with an older adult and assist that specific homeowner for the summer. This program helps your neighbors to stay safe and independent in their homes! Some homeowners have lawnmowers for volunteers to use and others don’t. If you don’t have your own, or can’t transport one, we’ll match you with someone that has a mower or provide one at the client's home for the summer.

Lawn mowing is usually completed every 7-14 days, depending on the amount of rain, how fast or slow the grass is growing, etc. If you know that you’ll be out of town or unavailable for a period of time, let us know, and we will find an alternate volunteer to help mow during that time.

Don't have the capacity to commit to the whole summer? That's just fine, too! Let us know when you're available to help mow, and we will add you to our subs list!

Questions about volunteering? Email us at volunteers@familyservicerochester.org or call 507-287-2010.
